Phoenix MUD Adds a Werewolf Class

What are they?
Lycanthropy and the legends surrounding it are as old as mankind. The ancient legends agree on only two points: The werewolf is evil, and it has a taste for human flesh. Beyond this, all is speculation.
Do they fear silver? Do they need a full moon and/or a wolfskin to change? Must they be male or female? Although Werewolves of the Phoenician variety do share some of these relatively recently acquired traits, there is no ultimate authority. Scroll down for a bibliography.

Phoenician Werewolves
Phoenician werewolves spend most of their lives as normal, well-adjusted law-abiding Phoenicians, questing, story-telling, laughing, crying, cursing, singing, loving, killing and living heartily. During the evening and night hours, however, at the time of the full or gibbous moons, the change occurs. During their wolf cycles, Phoenician werewolves can kill other werewolves or any of the other PK classes.
Wolf Moon encompasses 3 of the 8 phases of the moon. The total time a shapeshifter will be in Wolf form comes to 9 Phoenician evenings and nights out of every Phoenician month.

Phoenician werewolves have twice the strength of regular Phoenicians of the same level, and do +20 the damage. During their wolf cycle, remorted werewolves enjoy substantial increases in their stats, which
are not bound by the limit of 10 over natural stats restricting regular Phoenician remorts. A remorted werewolf has 3 times its natural constitution, 3 times its natural power, and twice the intelligence and agility. Its charisma sinks to an unmodifiable -10 and its wisdom remains unaffected. During their wolf course they can move heavy objects without help and wreck doors like a Warrior.

Werewolves of Phoenix also have certain skills available to them. See HELP FRENZY, HELP HOWL and HELP POUNCE. In addition, their bite supplies them with some strength during combat and deals additional damage. They have certain spell/skill advantages as well. The jab of a Werewolf, for instance, does damage on a par with the stab of a non-wolf. Animate is less expensive for werewolves, and the animated corpses last longer under their thrall. In addition, Werewolves can feed off the flesh of the zombies that follow them and help them fight. (See HELP DEVOUR).

Their thick pelts offer all Werewolves some protection from the damage done by the hidden dagger of SecondStrike, unless the wielder is a Warrior, in which case only Rodanthians have protection against it. Depending on their particular sect, werewolves enjoy either partial or complete resistance to various forms of attack. For info on the various lycanthropic orders, see Info WolfOrders.

Weaknesses
Werewolves cannot carry, wield or wear anything. There are no exceptions. Besides the obvious inventory limitations, this restriction also limits some of the skills they are capable of performing, for instance stab, backstab and secondstrike, or any
ability, skill or spell requiring an object to be picked up or held. Familiars hate and fear werewolves, as do helper Natives - these cannot be accessed by morphed Phoenicians at any time during their wolf cycles. Grouping is also impossible for them during this time, as they are loners by nature, requiring only the companionship of the moon and stars.

Diet
Werewolves of Phoenix can eat only meat. This includes corpses, both the inert kind and the re-animated Zombies created via the animate spell. See HELP DEVOUR.

Miscellaneous
Werewolves can cross water without a boat, but they are not natural swimmers, and swimming is exhausting for them. They do have the ability to see in the dark, but their sensitive eyes require a short period of adjustment on moving from dark to light or light to dark.

How does one become a Werewolf?
How indeed? This information is shrouded in mystery, but is said to involve a garden accessible only by night, a plant treated with a rare and noxious substance, a wearable item, clear wits and a great deal of courage. Any candidate must be a minimum of level 35 or rlevel 1+. This is all the information available. Further disclosure WILL result in severe penalties!

Is there a cure?
We don't think so. Elliott O'Donnell, in his 1912 volume "Werwolves", passes along some possible folk-remedies, but adds "[A]s to the success or non-success of these various methods of exorcism I cannot make any positive statement.... As far as I know, once a werewolf always a werwolf is the inviolable rule."

Wanna buy a mudlist website ?
Some interesting news that came in the mailbox...

MUDLISTS.COM is for sale. Unfortunately for me, I will be leaving the country for 6 - 12 months and I don't want to leave the domain unattended. If you have a love for the mud community and you like what we have done here, then I invite you to make an offer on the website.

The current offer is $500.00 USD. Payment will be made using PAYPAL, so you can charge to your credit card.

I would like to have the domain fully transfered to the new owner no later than June 15th.

Please send your inquiry to me at admin@mudlists.com, use MUDLISTS SALE as the subject line so that I don' t accidentally delete it ( I get over 300 pieces of spam email a day LOL, it really is quite funny!)

The Festival of MUDs
I decided to pass this bit of info along, it seems interesting...

---------------
Heya. In case you don't already know me, I'm Kris, owner of AethiaMUD and Event Manager for The Festival of MUD.

Well it's that time of year again! At first, I wasn't gonna hold an event this year due to time constraints. However, after receiving a barrage of emails from people in the past few weeks, I've decided to go ahead and do one after all. Apparently last year's Festival of MUD (FoM) was more successful than I thought....

In case this is the first you've heard of it, The Festival of MUD is an annual event (this being the 2nd annual) in which people from all around the mudding community get together on a single mud server. While there, you can meet new friends, attend various seminars on topics ranging from recruiting good builders to intermud communications networks, discuss and debate various issues of the day, or just strike up a bit of chat with some fellow mud owners, etc. The all-day event will be covered LIVE via AMR, my mud's internet radio station! There will also be an awards ceremony broadcast live over the radio stream, recognizing outstanding MU*s, resources, and individuals in the mudding community. Some of the awards this year will be: MUD of the Year, Admin of the Year, Player of the Year, Coder of the Year, a creativity award, etc. Winners receive shiny trophies to boast on their websites....

If last year is any indication, this will prove to be a very fun-filled day for all who attend! If nothing else, you'll at least get a chance to meet some new people, and tell people a bit about your MUD (just so long as you're not a spammer hehe)....

So, when is it? I'm glad you asked! The 2004 Festival of MUD will be held this month on Saturday, May 29th, 2004, and will start at: 3 PM Pacific (6 PM ET / 11 PM GMT) and will run all the way until midnight (pacific time)! Nobody's expected to stay for the whole thing, of course; many people will make an appearance whenever their schedules permit. Some of us will be there the whole time, though. And, of course, this event is open to all members of the MU* community (MUSH, MUCK, MOO, etc), not just MUDs. :)

If you're interested in attending, or just learning more, please feel free to visit our newly-redesigned website at http://www.aethia.org/fom. Although it isn't required, you are strongly encouraged to RSVP (there's a form for it on the site). That way, you can ensure that your desired screenname will be reserved for you, and we'll be able to have some idea as to how many attendees we should expect. When you RSVP, you're under no obligation to actually attend; we understand that your RSVP simply means that you plan to attend if you can, time-permitting.

Although it goes without saying, there is obviously no fee or anything involved in attending this event. Like most of you who run your own MUDs, I'm not in this for the money....

Also, word-of-mouth is very important as well, since I obviously can't send out emails to every MU* owner out there! I'm contacting MUD owners and admins in hopes that they'll tell their players about the event, and encourage them to attend as well, and to tell other people about it, and so-on. We're hoping to have a really big turnout this year! And again, people from MUSHes and the like are just as welcome! :)

Last year, there were over 150 attendees at the event! We had a few first-time glitches, including a few server crashes (maybe it's because I was dumb enough to use an experimental codebase under Windows). This year I'm leasing a more stable server using RedHat 9 on a T3 connection, and using a far more proven and stable codebase for the MUD. With those things in mind, and with the overwhelming success of last year's event in our wake, my goal for this year is to break the 300 mark for RSVP's! That would break the all-time record for such an event, set last year when we had a little over 150....

If you'd like more information, including the RSVP form and a list of who has RSVP'd thus far, please feel free to take a look at our website at: http://www.aethia.org/fom

If you have any questions/comments, please feel free to visit the "contact us" form on the website. Either that, or you can just reply to this email (fom@aethiamud.org), and I'll get back to you as soon as I can. *beeeep!*

Anyways, thanks for your time, and I hope to see you there on the big day! =)

New site: Text-Gaming Central
A new website opened up devoted to text-based gaming, one that hopes to buck some recent trends in the text-based community and improve its standing overall. The mission statement:

Text-Gaming Central

"I have long been frustrated with the organization of the text-based community as a whole out there. We have something that has so much potential to still be popular (despite the beautiful graphical games) but the unity and cooperation between games and codebase "cliques" out there is generally terrible. For this reason, Text-Gaming Central has arrived on the scene.

"I have no illusions of a fairy tell uniting of the many different groups out there, but I do figure a solid means of communication for players and administrators interested in text gaming out there would be a great thing to have. Having looked at the other sites that have done (or attempted this), I do believe there is room for improvement :)

"So here we are in the infancy of this site and I'm toiling away at trying to create something useful. If you have ideas that you'd like to submit, please email or private message me. I'm also available on ICQ via 45905171.

"Thanks for your interest in the site, and I hope you find it useful!"

Pay these guys a visit, I plan to submit info about this site and the two others I handle soon.

New Banner Rotator
Frustrated by the lack of compatibility the new Netscape has for any javascripts older than a few months, I have junked the banner rotator used on the mudlist page of this site and replaced it with a new rotator. So now you'll see mud banners while you're running the NEW Netscape 7.1, and probably 7.0 and 6.2. Internet Explorer never had a problem it seemed.

ANY Abermud that wants to add their banner to the rotation, please send it on over!

Webrings updated.
It's been a long while since I've messed with the set of webring memberships, so I've gone through and rejoined ones that have dropped TCAL from their rings despite the ring links remaining here and removed ones that have been discontinued. I shall be looking for additional rings to join as they are a decent promotional vehicle for the site.

There is a webring for Abermud, if you have an Abermud site you should join up with the ring!

New Zone Writer for Abermud
PQuill

Phoenix MUD has released a new version of their zone writer for Windows. Alas at this time it is a zone writer that makes zones specifically for Phoenix itself due to the special Phoenix-specific tags that are used.

Cruel Doubt on the Net Again: Assault on Video Games Continues
Yes believe it or not I had begun work on an AA #15, but after the rather disgraceful attacks on behalf of a couple certain people for the last newsletter I did not get motivated enough to do a full AA. But here's something I did complete in it, and it's something that needs to be shared due to how stupid the events described in the piece are.

It seems that after I composed my manifesto in AA #14 against all of those people who have been driving to make video games the de facto cause of the downward spiral of society, the bombardment has been pushed to extremitites. But for those who have joined us late in the discussion, a quick explanation about the series. To review, "Cruel Doubt" is the true story of teenagers playing "Dungeons and Dragons" who took their role-playing to the real world and commit murder. Segue to electronic entertainment and role-playing, where video games have been blamed for the massacre at Columbine, drug use, deliquency, alcoholism, brain rot, and violent behavior in people. Family members see you playing MUD and think you are traveling toward activity with a satanic cult. Politicians tried to keep kids from buying or playing the games by passing laws that later get overturned by the courts. Shrinks psychoanalyze the behavior and measure the brain activity of guiena pigs playing the polar opposites of game genres, the most violent and the non-violent games. The author carefully notes the evolution of the older crowd's pelting of the video game industry for the past twenty years, seeing that the game-haters have changed very little over the years. The bottom line is, video games are fun, they are a lot of fun, they are a heck of a lot of fun, and if you're not good at them or enjoying them as much as you should, you need to keep practicing until you get better at them.

Over the past couple of months, a few outrageous incidents have taken place. First, the nation of Greece passed a law in an effort to wipe out illegal gambling effectively saying the government cannot tell the difference between Video Poker and the Super Mario Bros. Second, at an internet cafe in a South Korean neighborhood, one person playing Counter-Strike jumped up from his computer and savagely attacked another person in the room who admitted to fragging him. Other similar incidents ended up in murder. We've had a few people die from playing video games on the computer for more than 24 hours straight. A teenager blames the game "Grand Theft Auto 3" for his string of one hundred car break-ins. Lastly, an Everquest player commits suicide and his mother blames the game itself for it.

In one of the most ridicious assaults against video gaming not seen since the likes of Ferdinand Macros of the Philippines in the early 1980s, the nation of Greece passed a ban on all forms of electronic interactive entertainment. These include, video games on your cell phone, Game Boys, Nintendos, Playstations, X-Boxes, games on your PC, the Internet, games on your wristwatch, battery-operated LCD games, and many more. Anyone, Greek citizen, or traveling tourist caught playing anything considered fun on a electronic device was rounded up and hauled off to jail. Reported penalities for playing these games have varied greatly. One source says the fines would be up to $150,000 but others have claimed its only about $7500. The jail time would be up to one year in jail. Why did they pass this anti-gaming law? The bastard politicians out there were trying desperately to stamp out illegal gambling, which apparently is a rampant problem in their country. At one time, they banned decks of playing cards and dice, which did nothing to get rid of the problem. They see people playing video poker, blackjack, and slot machines at bars. They also see people playing in internet casinos at internet cafes alongside people playing Counter-Strike, Unreal Tournament, Quake 3 and others. And yes, anyone who plays MUD will also go to jail. But there are others playing the same games for fun and are not gambling or winning anything. In a vein of twisted logic, the dimwits stated that they could not tell the difference between gambling machines and video arcade games so if we ban all forms of electronic entertainment, it will be much easier to get rid of the gambling. The idiots did not even consult the general public on what it thinks of this move. After the first arrests were made, and internet cafes closed down, the protests and picketing began. The initial test cases where prosecutors tried to have owners of an internet cafe sentenced to prison, were thankfully, declared unconstitutional by the judges hearing the cases. Thank goodness, though it should have NEVER gotten to this point. You don't pass a law that's unconstitutional, cause the judges half the time ignore the constitution and uphold the law, effectively amending the constitution without a vote from anyone else. The lawmaking morons despite the defeat, haven't given up their quest to stop gambling, and are making another attempt to write an anti-gambling law that can be applied to computers. The Crimefighter says, if anyone DARES try to pass a law here like Greece did, that WILL BE THE VERY LAST bill you will ever vote on cause I'll be at the doorstep of the idiot politician making life very miserable for them.

Unfortunately, another nation months later passed a ban on all violent video games. The central American country of Honduras did the deed even though it's a well known fact that most of the nation is incredibly poor and couldn't afford a gaming system even if they wanted one. Also, the country is infamous for all the drug running that goes on there, and most of the violence stems from that. Yet, once again, scapegoating is so much easier than dealing with the real problem.

What is with the South Korean gamers? There have been a few incidents where at internet cafes one guy murders another as an act of an ultimate sore-loser when they are losing at their favorite game that they think they should be dominating everyone else. Others run on these MMOGs (Massive Multiplayer Online Games) as a gang and pretty much act as the Bloods and the Crips attacking people at random for fun. Yahoo! magazine covered this in depth in the August 2002 issue, though I doubt the games themselves caused these people to become violent criminals, they were already violent in general and would have attacked someone if they didn't get their way in any other activity, including hopscotch and tiddlywinks.

From the violent to the obsessed, another South Korean plays on the computer at an internet cafe for 86 straight hours and DIES. How does one play on a computer for 86 straight hours or three and a half days? This cafe stays open for 24 hours, no minors allowed after 10pm. Are you kidding? Why would a net cafe stay open 24 hours a day? Who's coming over there at night? Doesn't anyone sleep out there? The man was 24 years old and unemployed. He began playing on a Friday, didn't sleep nor eat, and when he was done, he collasped in front of a counter, got up and went to the restroom then died. I KNOW I couldn't play 24 hours straight, much less a couple of hours without having to get up and move around. I suspect this guy suffered the same condition as someone riding in an airplane seat for too long and not getting up once in a while to get the circulation going in your body. Another man in Taiwan died from playing video games at a cyber cafe for 32 straight hours, pausing only to use the restroom. When he died, he was bleeding from the nose and foaming at the mouth. Now I've never heard of someone getting these conditions from playing games, have they tested this guy for drug use? It's amazing that cafe owners do not notice that certain people have been there for such a long time. Isn't there a time limit?

Out of southwest Florida, a hispanic teenager broke at least five knives stabbing and killing his friend in a dispute about a video game on football. The killer stabbed the victim in the chest and the rest of his body, going back to the kitchen to get another knife after each blade broke. The incident triggered when the victim punched the killer in the mouth when he got angry over a game. Okay, I don't see anyone running around wanting to ban football yet, I didn't know football caused knife fights, cause there's no knives in football! He's been charged with 1st-degree murder.

In Wisconsin, a teenager was arrested for a string of one hundred automobile break-ins. His reason for committing this many crimes? I was influenced by the game "Grand Theft Auto 3". GTA3 of course, is a game where you steal cars and act like a one-man crime wave. It's rated M, but it should really be rated AO for Adults Only due to the subject matter. What in the world were his parents doing during his crime-spree? Why did they allow him to play this game? Did they not know what it was about? A lot of parents buy this game for their kids, not notice that it's rated M, see their kids play it then take it back to the store screaming at the sales clerk about the content of the game and not telling them of it. My solution to this problem is enrolling these dumb parents in a class called Video Games 101, with me as the teacher.

Here's a story I missed, and this one comes out of Russia. Six teenagers commit suicide in the same city, due to what authorities claim was their fatal passion for the video game "Final Fantasy". Three of them hung themselves, the other three jumped off a high building. Investigators think the psychology of the game itself, or code signals on the CD-ROM made these guys kill themselves. Oh please! This game has been out for a couple of years! And this is the only place where kids committed suicide over this game in the entire world! Something else is going on here, and the video game is all too easy to scapegoat.

Lastly, a 48 Hours report on addictions caught my eye. They took a look at the most popular of the MMOGs, Everquest. They interview a couple of current players who are playing the game excessively, and their excuse is, the game never ends. I've never played Everquest, especially because it's pay-to-play, but at some point you reach a point where you've hit the highest level and explored everything there is to explore. Surely there's a wizhood status in the game? Doesn't the game ever get boring after playing it for so long and repeating a number of sequences over time? They zero in on someone with a history of mental problems that committed suicide while the Everquest game was running on the computer. The mother of the deceased blames the game itself for her son's death, and that if he didn't play it, he might be alive. So this mother who formed the group "Everquest Widows" plans to file a lawsuit against Sony. As noted, this kid had a lot of mental problems throughout his life, and once again, the video game is scapegoated instead of the harder to find root causes.
